On January 25, 2017, at the Prime Minister’s Office. Mr. Chaleun Yiapaoher, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office stated the achievement of the ordinary session and prime minister - deputy prime minister meeting during the first month of 2017 to the media that the government considered and addressed 02 issues for instance management of import fuel and the solution of illegal import. For the solution of illegal import, Ministry of Finance together with concerned sectors inspected and monitored import of vehicle with tax evasion in the amount of 5.639 vehicles.

According to the website of Lao Economic Daily (https://laoedaily.com.la/24615/) stated that on December 2017, the government has resolved the issue of illegal importing 11,030 vehicles including 4,449 cars and 6,581 motorcycles. It is able to generate revenue 177.7 billion Kip (168.8 billion Kip for tax-customs and 8.9 billion Kip for fined charges) into the state budget.

In order to mitigate the issue and comply with laws and regulations, the Ministry of Finance has issued a Notification on Solution of Import Vehicle with Tax Evasion No. 1984 / MOF, dated 27 June 2018. Any person who has possession of vehicles with tax evasion, shall pay tax-customs in accordance with regulation and cooperate with tax authorities in the investigation of the source of vehicles. If any person deliberately avoids paying tax-customs, shall be arrested by tax authorities or concerned state agency and be fined 70% of the vehicle’s value.
