The embassy of the Lao PDR in Washington D.C, United States of America notifies a Letter on the Revision of the Import Requirements of Food, Beverages and Dietary Supplements of the U.S that informs the change of labeling requirements, new regulations for preventive controls for human food, and FDA food facility registration renewal requirement.
The U.S Food and Drug has adopted two new rules that mandate significant changes about labelling of food, beverages, and dietary supplements which requires additional technical and other information. Manufacturers and importers are required to complete this revision in two years starting from 26 July 2016. If the labeling does not comply with import rules, the relevant authorities will seize the product.
Additionally, the 2011 FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requires most registered food facilities to write and implement a Food Safety Plan in September 2016. Although many facilities have food safety programs such as HACCP, ISO 22000, or BRC, writing and implementing a FDA Food Safety Plan is a new and different requirement.
The FSMA also requires that food facilities renew their registrations with FDA between 1st October 2016 to 31st December 2016. Shipments from Lao PDR may be refused to entry into the United States if the associated food facility registration is not renewed properly.
