On 30 September 2013, a consultation meeting on the obstacles for timber movements and export of timber products was held at the Xokbounma Hotel, Paksan district, Bolikhaxay Province under the chairmanship of Mrs. Bansaty Thepphavong, Acting Director General of the Department of Import and Export and co-chaired by Mr. Singkham Souvankham, Deputy Director of the Bolikhamxay Governor office and Mr Sangaoun Savang, Director of the Department of Industry and Commerce, Borlikhamxay Province with participants from the forestry sector, the financial sector from the Province and some of the business sectors from Vientiane Capital, Xaiyabouly, Xiengkhoung, Borlikhaxay, Khammoune, Savannakhet, Champasack and Attapue provinces. he objectives of the meeting were to review and listen to recommendations on the actual situation for implementing the regulations on the administration of the movement of timber and timber products.
The meeting was very important as it was a consultation to identify various obstacles that threaten the export of timber products in order to utilize that information to improve the efficiency of the administration of timber throughout the country and also to ensure the sustainability of implementing a forestry conservation biodiversity policy. The meeting was conducted in a dynamic atmosphere and received direct recommendations from the participants both from government and the private sectors.
This meeting was successful as expected. Most participants agreed to improve regulation that is not accordant and harmonious. The meeting organizers will take the results of this meeting result for dissemination and will hold further consultation with the concerned sectors at central level in order to consider improving legal documents, regulations and issue a definitive harmonized administrative policy for the timber business in Lao PDR.
