The meeting was hosted under the honorable chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Aksavang Vongvichit, Minister of Health and Dr. Liu Yungkuo, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) to Lao PDR. Various participants from various Ministries and business sectors attended the meeting.
The Food Law (amended) No. 06/NA, dated 24 July 2013 was endorsed by the National Assembly and was promulgated with the Prime Minister’s Decree No. 172/PM, dated 20 August, 2013. The previous Food Law (2004) contained 8 sections and 54 articles but the amended Food Law consists of 10 sections, 6 parts and 85 articles (49 new articles, 32 amended articles and 4 articles with the same content as before). Section 3, articles 34, 35 and 36 concerning food export, food import and food transit state that any requirements and procedures on the importation of food are defined in separate regulations.
The amended Food Law will constitute a tight legal reference for harmonizing the management, monitoring and inspection over the whole country with regard to food and food business to ensure quality, effectiveness, safety and nutritional value and aiming at protecting consumers’ health, promoting food business and contributing to the protection and development of the nation. The law defines the coordination between concerned sector on management of the food business, reduces duplicated procedure and implements the National single window and harmonizes the coordination aimed at protecting consumers’ health, promoting food business and contributing to the protection and development of the nation and also complying with international and regional regulations.
