The Frist meeting of the Non-Tariff Measures review sub-working group was officially organized in order to open the floor for discussion and exchange- views among the focal points for NTMs that have been assigned from the related sectors. In addition, there was a presentation of the background of Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) to create better understanding and harmonization  on the concept. Furthermore, there was a presentation of the objectives and expectations of the NTMs review programme, a presentation of the NTM data catalogue and an explanation  of how to fill the data into the catalogue.

Mrs. Bansaty Thepphavong commented that, after Lao PDR became officially a member of the WTO in early 2013, Lao PDR is obliged to gradually terminate any unnecessary measures that created barriers to trade. Therefore, Lao PDR has to adjust Non-Tariff Measures (NTMs) for simplicity in compliance with international regulations. This will contribute to the improvement of the trade environment in Lao PDR, facilitating trader principally. The review of NTMs is a priority for the government to pay attention to. Consequently, as it is a task that relates to various sectors, concerned sectors whose work relates to trade facilitation are called to collaborate actively and closely with each other in order to analyze measures and legal documents issued by various sectors in order to achieve the above objectives, ensure that existing measures are not a barrier to trade and implement facilities for the movement of  goods that are convenient , speedy and in compliance with international regulations.

This Non-Tariff Measures review sub-working group meeting was conducted successfully as expected. The participants expressed their interest by exchanging views, commenting actively and showing willingness to provide the support aimed at addressing this task adequately and successfully.
