The government of Lao PDR has invested to improve the infrastructure at the Phoudou local border check point in Paklai district, Xayyabouly province and the road from Paklai town to Phoudou to meet the standard since 2012 to upgrade such local border check point to be an international border check point that is able to handle the increasing trade between Lao PDR and Thailand and to facilitate the transportation of import-export goods to be convenient and fast. The Paklai-Phoudou road project started from the three junction in Ban Kaengsao (road# 4) to the border of Thailand (Phoudou) with 27.99 KM long and also constructed road to Ban Buamlao and Ban Phakeo with 4.21 KM long, total 32.20 KM long. Throughout that road, there are 5 bridges with 174 meter long. This project was supported by the NEDA with the cost of 718 million (Thai Baht) of 20% free aid which worth 134.6 million (Thai baht) and a low interest loan of 80% which worth 574.4 million (Thai Baht). At present, the construction of the road and building are complete, and are waiting for the hand over term, then there would be an official open ceremony which would take place on 26 June 2014.
It’s expected that the construction of the road from Paklai to Phoudou will influence the increasing of economy of Paklai district, Xayyabouly province. At the same time, the open the Phoudou international border check point in Paklai district, Xayyabouly province and Ban Khot district, Oudtaradid province will assist to boost the production. In the past, Paklai district still faced many difficulties on the market issue and transportation in goods because it used to be a local border check point, and goods must be transported through the Ken Thao international border check point. In addition, it will attract more investors to come to Paklai for investment, and when the Mekong Bridge across from Paklai to Xanakham is complete and ready to be used, it will also make Paklai to become a main route, which will encourage other sectors in the area of trade, agriculture, and service to be extend more and more. At present, Paklai district is planning a new strategic plan to build Paklai district to be an industrial district with the high-tech processing a long with the service.
