On 22nd August 2016, the veterinarian team of Xepone District was on duty along the road number 9 to prevent against the import of hazardous food being sold in the local markets. The team seized cow’s internal organ in the amount of 46 Kgs which were contaminated with formalin. These products were imported by from Vietnamese merchandiser who carried them on motorbike across the border.

The Agricultural and Forestry Office of Xepone District revealed that these products were imported without permission or obtain necessary document about the product and they were illegally transported. It means that these products didn’t import through border checkpoint where the authorities can inspect to approve safety of this import and it is inconsistent with the Law on Livestock Production and Veterinary Matters No. 03/NA, dated 25th July 2008 and Decree on the Control of the Movement of Animal and Animal Products No. 230/GoL, dated 4th June 2012.

Furthermore, the Rapid Test Kit found that the products contaminated with formalin exceeding safety level in which the existing studies found that consuming large size of food contaminated with formalin causes stomach ache, vomit, senseless, become unconscious, damage kidney or life of a person.

Therefore, in the afternoon of the same day, Agricultural and Forestry Office of Xepone District, Department of Agricultural and Forestry of Savannakhet Province organized a ceremony to destroy the products. This ceremony was attended by Mr. Vongxay Xayyachak, Deputy Chief of Xepone District, Mr. Sikhoun Banminivong, Chief of Agricultural and Forestry Promotion of Xepone District, provincial hazardous food elimination committee and other relevant offices as a witness of the ceremony.
