On March 13, 2018, at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ministry of Science and Technology has organized a Dissemination Workshop on International Trademark Registration under Madrid Protocol was chaired by Dr. Khanlasy Keobounphan, Director General of Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology, attracting Heads of Departments, Companies and Business Units to attend. The objective of this workshop is to promote and disseminate information on Trademark Registration under Madrid Protocol to entrepreneurs in Lao PDR. The Madrid Protocol has all 116 member countries, including Lao PDR, had a sequence 97 out of all member countries and also joined the protocol on December 07th, 2015 and validity on March 07th, 2016. In addition, the benefits to be gained from using Madrid Protocol is Madrid Protocol gives trademark owners the possibility of having their trademarks protected in several countries and trademark owners will save cost and time of registration. Currently, Department of Intellectual Property has received the applications for registration of international trademarks through the Madrid system, which has identified 2,482 applications in the Lao PDR, and two Lao companies have already applied the Madrid system such as Champalao Agriculture Import-Export Co Ltd and Rajdhevee Clinic Co Ltd.
Director General of Department of Intellectual Property also expressed her conviction that The Madrid system is aimed at facilitating trademark owners the possibility of having their trademarks protected in several countries by simply filing one application in order to save costs, time and ensure transparency for registration.
