On May 23, 2018, the Trade Facilitation Secretariat held a consultation meeting on the elimination of issuance of import and export license of steel, cement, and rice. The meeting was discussed with the public and business sectors. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Soulinhon Philavong, Director General of the Department of Import and Export. The purpose of this meeting is to consent the elimination of steel, cement or rice from the list of goods subject to automatic import or export license.

In the past, the industry and commerce sector managed goods (steel, cement, and rice) aims to collect statistics on imports and exports through the issuance of licenses. Currently, the industry and commerce sectors are able to obtain the data via the ASYCUDA system from Customs Department, without issuing of lisences in order to reduce the procedure of business operations.

Therefore, Department of Import and Export discussed the possibility of eliminating the issuance of import license of steel and cement, and import and export license of rice from the list of goods subject to import or export license.
