ICO reported that the global production of coffee in 2017-2018 amounted to 9.579.600 tons, increased by 1.2% compared to a recent year. The coffee production in Latin American countries amounted to 4.235.400 tons, fell by 6.1% compared to a recent year. The coffee production in Africa countries amounted to 1.059.600 tons, increased by 3.2%. Asian and Oceania countries amounted to 2.969.400 tons, increased by 10%. The coffee production in Mexico and Central America countries amounted to 1.315.200 tons, increased by 7.1% compared to a recent year.

Pursuant to the report of Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 2018, the total planting coffee area is 97.400 hectare, the harvested area is 82.980 hectare and the output is 154.435 tons (green coffee beans), increased by 36% compared to 2014 (113.580 tons) and export achieved 31.495 tons or value of export is US$ 69.902.867.  

The coffee production in 2015-2018 was improved for its quantity and quality as a result of the increasing of domestic and foreign investors focus on coffee production. In 2015, the total planting coffee area is 93.280 hectare, the harvested area is 77.540 hectare and the output is 136.120 tons. In 2016, the total planting coffee area is 95.600 hectare, the harvested area is 80.890 hectare and the output is 150.795 tons. In 2017, the total planting coffee area is 97.400 hectare, the harvested area is 82.980 hectare and the output is 154.135 tons.

There are 11 provinces for planting coffee, for instance, Phongsali, Oudomxai, Houaphan, Louangphabang, Xaignabouli, Salavan, Xekong, Champasak and Attapeu. Among them, the province has the largest crop area, for instance, Champasack covers 51,200 hectares, Salavan covers 24,000 hectares, and Xekong covers 13,370 hectares.

In recent year, the coffee export of Lao PDR has not achieved the expected target. In 2015, the coffee export amounted to 21.159 tons, the value of export was about US$ 51.38 million. In 2016, the coffee export amounted to 51.383 tons, the value of export was about US$ 96.32 million. In 2017, the coffee export amounted to 28.320 tons, the value of export was about US$ 77.69 million. In 2018, the coffee export amounted to 31.495 tons, the value of export was about US$ 60.90 million. The main export countries are EU countries, Asia and American and the main market is China, Vietnam, Japan, and Thailand.
