Admittedly, Thailand from the early time has been the first strategic trading partner for Lao PDR both in terms of exports and imports, covering most of tariff lines. Each year, a bilateral trade value between the two countries increases incessantly with a rapid speed. Due to the two governments’ close attention, similar traditions and dialogues, and the enthusiasm of the businessmen of the two nations in doing business together, the bilateral trade relation has been consistently intensified, progressing towards new quality overtime.

The success of Lao-Thai bilateral trade enrichment particularly in the last five years is manifestly explained with trade statistics. In 2007, trade value reached only USD 1.78 billion, but in 2011 it rose to more than USD 3.9 billion, of which Laos’ exports to Thailand accounted for more than USD 1 billion. Over the past ten months of 2012, we have already witnessed the extremely large value of trade of USD 4 billion, which is even larger than the whole trade value of its preceding year. Such growth is enormous with an increasing rate of over 30% a year and has shown significance reflecting a unique feature of trade cooperation between the two countries, which none of other Laos’ trading partners could do at the moment.

Various activities and cooperation plans are fashioned to stimulate and push forward such relation. The governments through the mechanism of Cooperative Plan Meeting between the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of the Laos and the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, mutually set a bilateral trade target to be achieve by 2015 at USD 5.77 billion, in which Laos’ exports to Thailand must be tripled or reached USD 2.2 billion by 2015 comparing with that of 2010.
