A walkie-talkie is a communicating device which is under the control of Telecommunication Department, Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. Currently certain individuals and business sectors import, distribute, sell and use the devices without a permit or a license. In order to administer such action according to the telecommunication law, The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has issued notification No 1229/ MPTC.CO, dated 13th  August 2013 on the importing, distributing, and use of such equipment (walkie-talkies).

The Ministry announced that any individual or enterprise wishing to operate a business involving the sale of walkie-talkies must be granted a license for their import, distribution and repair under the government regulations.

Anyone wanting to import a device to use for their own purposes, rather than for sale, must still get permission from the Ministry or its provincial offices. Individuals and groups are prohibited from importing or using a walkie-talkie without permission.

Owners of unregistered walkie-talkies must present the devices to the relevant offices within 45 days from the first day of the announcement.

After the 45 days grace period, those found importing or using walkie-talkies will be fined in accordance with the Law on Telecommunications and other related regulations.
